Description

NGC 4565 the spindle or needle galaxy is enormous 'island universe' round 100,000 LY in diameter, and ~40 million LY from my 183C sensor in the Coma 1 galaxy cloud...one of the brighter needles in this particular haystack. It has a bulging central core with a bright nucleus, dark bisecting dust lane, and a hint of younger star formation in the outer arms - see my previous image at longer FL.

The plethora of faint background galaxies make this an enjoyable image, but please don't look any closer then the 'plate-solve' (mouseover) as you will be sorely disappointed. Imaged under a high haze, I am trying to make the most of what remaining darkness we have as spring retreats into summer. Calibrated in Nebulosity and processed in Cyril Richard's excellent 'Siril 1.2 beta2' this is a full frame, unbinned image, with a little cropping to remove stacking artifacts.

Summer is a time to stand back and enjoy the wonderful starry vistas of our own, not dissimilar, Milky Way galaxy.
